New Delhi: India's air traffic is booming, amid crippling airport infrastructure crunch at its aviation epicentres of Delhi and Mumbai. This January to November saw 10.6 crore people flying within India — more than the 9.9 crore domestic flyers witnessed in the 12 months of 2016. According to DGCA, January to November 2016 had seen just over 9 crore domestic flyers and this year that number has jumped by 17.3%. At current growth levels, 2017 is all set to end with over 11 crore domestic flyers — highest ever domestic travel in a year for India.
The record travel comes also due to steep rise in air travel during festive and holiday months this year.
For the third time in 2017, India saw more than a crore domestic flyers in a month. A crore and five lakh people flew within the country this November — 17% higher than 89.7 lakh in same month last year. October and May, 2017, had also seen over a crore domestic flyers.
While the growth in air travel has come on the back of low fares offered by airlines, airport infrastructure has failed to keep pace with this jump in travel. Mumbai airport is completely choked, with no new slots to offer as it has no place to expand. Delhi airport — with ample land bank — did not expand its terminal or runway capacity and now here too getting new slots are very tough.
