Govt holds discussions with telcos, airlines on in-flight wi-fi services

The government today held detailed discussions with telecom operators and airlines on framing guidelines for in-flight data and voice services, sources said. The meeting comes within a fortnight of the Telecom Commission, the highest policy making body of Department of Telecom (DoT), clearing a proposal for allowing in-flight connectivity.

Once the guidelines are in place, it would allow travellers to use internet and voice services on mobile phones during flights in the Indian airspace.

Sources said officials from the Telecom Department, the Civil Aviation Ministry, telecom companies and airlines participated in the meeting that lasted for nearly 90 minutes.

The meeting deliberated upon having a "working model" for operationalising in flight connectivity' and sought inputs from both operators and airlines on the issue, they added.
