Mumbai: Flight delays appear to most people to result from vagaries of seasons and other unforeseeable hitches. But there is actually another, lesser-known, cause for many hold-ups: lateness, it turns out, is inbuilt in various flights' operations.
An analysis of 'on-time performances' of domestic flights from and to Mumbai airport for three months this year showed that certain flights were consistently late—several as many as 25 to 28 times in a month.
Every carrier, in fact, had its little list of flights that inadvertently came or departed late. Among the offenders in the April-June period were Air India's AI614 from Ahmedabad, Go Air's G8-345 to Delhi, Jet Airways' 9W316 from Jodhpur, Spice Jet's SG804 to Kolkata and IndiGo's 6E326 from Kolkata.
"If certain flights of all carriers are getting delayed more than 15 or 20 times a month, clearly there are systemic issues that need fixing," said Amber Dubey, a partner at the global consultancy firm KPMG.
