Chennai: A 25-year-old Engineering graduate from Coimbatore was taken into custody by the police for ordering a ‘metal-body air revolver’ from a US-based firm. He has been remanded to judicial custody at the Puzhal Central Prison, however appeals have been made to dismiss the charges against him once it comes up for hearing, sources indicated.
“When the gun was found and flagged as a possible firearm, we took it for testing and the ballistics experts took some time over it. They found that it was a dummy revolver with a metal body, barrel and a firing pin, except for the fact that it wasn’t a live firearm,” said a police official.
Since the cargo wing at the airport, through which it was supposed to travel to Coimbatore, flagged it as ‘dangerous goods’, the police were pushed to take action.
“It was obvious that it was not a harmful gun, but given that it was metal bodied and capable of damage, we were forced to take him into custody,” he added.
