Surat: Airports Authority of India (AAI) has given in-principle approval for setting up a cargo terminal at Surat airport to boost south Gujarat's industrial sector including textile, chemical, diamonds, horticulture and ancillary industries.
This has come as good news for the diamantaires investing in world-class Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) project that is coming up at Dream City in Khajod.
The cargo terminal is expected to ease the movement of precious cargo including diamonds, gold and jewellery from Surat.
Sources said that the proposal for setting up the terminal was pending with AAI for the last couple of years. It was after the infrastructural and other works at the airport being put on fast track following the recent buffalo-hit incident that the AAI gave an in-principle approval for the cargo terminal with a handling capacity of around 5,000 tonnes.
