Varkhand gram sabha flays Mopa EIA report

Panaji:  A gram sabha of Varkhand-Nagzar panchayat in Pernem taluka criticized the environment impact assessment (EIA) report on the proposed Mopa international airport as a bogus one, not reflecting the ground realities on the vast plateau with a rich bio-diversity.

The meeting held on Monday and chaired by sarpanch Sanjay Tulasker discussed the EIA report, which has been sent by the government to the panchayats on the periphery of the proposed airport.
The panchayat passed a resolution denouncing the EIA report as it had 'overlooked' even obvious facts about the fauna on the plateau. "No wild life has been shown as existing here except for some rabbits and domestic animals," a villager alleged.

The villagers also pointed out that during the peak of the monsoon season, more than 30 springs gush out from different parts of the plateau. But the EIA is silent about the rich sources of water. The EIA report has been prepared by the engineers India ltd (EIL) and supported by the state government.
