Belagavi: With the environment ministry given nod for the expansion of Sambra Airport here couple of days ago, the work is expedited. According to sources of Airport Authority of India (AAI), it has targeted to finish the work till May end and make ready the runway for Boeing planes.
The clearance of environment ministry for expansion work was pending since over one year. AAI has sanctioned Rs 141 crores package for the overall development of the Sambra Airport including increasing the length of runway to 1,830 meters, construction of compound wall, expanding capacity of terminal building, civil and electrical works besides constructing perimeter road, drains etc.
Speaking to the TOI, airport controller Eshwarappa said state government has given 370 acres land besides water, electricity and security in free of cost and giving support all the way. Once the expansion work is finished, big airbuses with 170 to 200 seating capacity will begin landing. "We have planned to keep continue services of charter planes at the airport even when the expansion work is on," he said.
