City fog forces Air India flight to divert

Surat: The Diamond City on Monday was enveloped in a dense fog forcing the authorities to divert the Delhi-Surat Air India flight as visibility dropped drastically at Surat airport.

Official sources said the Surat-bound flight from Delhi was diverted to Ahmedabad airport. The flight arrived at Surat airport from Ahmedabad at 11:23am whereas its daily scheduled arrival is 8:30am. The airport authorities said there was very less visibility and that the pilot of Air India was asked to divert the flight to Ahmedabad.

Airport director Pramod Thakre told TOI, "It was unsafe to allow the Delhi-Surat Air India flight to land at the airport in the dense fog. Thus, we communicated to the pilot through the ATC to divert the flight to Ahmedabad airport. Once the fog cleared by 9:30am, the flight departed from Ahmedabad airport and touched Surat at about 11:23am."

The fog formation began in early morning hampering visibility on the runway and across the city.

"We are checking with the weather department about the situation on Tuesday. There is all likelihood of fog formation, but the intensity would be less compared to Monday. However, we have communicated to Air India and other private airline companies operating between Bhavnagar and Surat to reschedule their timings," said an airport official.
