Nagpur: After central government approved the land swap deal with Indian Air Force (IAF), it has cleared decks for roping in a private partner for the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Airport. However, before courting allies Mihan India Limited (MIL), the agency running the airport, plans to rationalize the mandate for the private investor.
The plan is to gradually develop the airport, rather than taking up the entire Rs1500 crore works as proposed by the consultant. Initially, only the infrastructure which is of the highest priority will be set up.
With the help of private investment, the plan was to develop the Cargo Hub as proposed when Mihan project was conceived in the late 1990s. The current stance, however, indicates of a shift from the grandiose plans drawn earlier.
Sources say that MIL management wants the deal to be realistic so that the investors also respond. Already the projections have been halved as compared to what was made by the L&T Ramboll in 2000 when the project was in the initial stages. India Aviation, the new consultant, has pegged the project cost Rs1500 crore as against the over Rs3000 crore by L&T Ramboll.
