Panaji: A panel has been constituted to decide the fate of the old airport terminal building at Dabolim.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has re-mooted its proposal, sent to the government last year as well, to demolish the old terminal building to make way for parking of two more Code E aircraft. At present, only two such aircraft—wide-bodied airplanes such as the Boeing 767 or Airbus 330—can be parked at the airport, sources told TOI.
The state government wants AAI to reconsider its proposal and has appointed a committee under chief secretary Kewal Kumar Sharma to study the issue. In 2014 too the state government, with current Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar as chief minister, had wanted AAI to reconsider its proposal and to study whether the old building could be put to some alternative use, such as cargo-handling.
