Kozhikode: Aviation experts have raised serious safety concerns over the enormous political and public pressure being exerted to postpone the badly needed runway re-carpeting works at the Karipur airport scheduled to start on June 1, unmindful of the huge safety risks involved in delaying the work.
The union civil aviation minister had in a meeting with Kozhikode MP MK Raghavan on Wednesday promised that the runway strengthening and re-carpeting works will be re-scheduled in view of the difficulties it might cause to passengers in the upcoming peak season comprising Onam, Eid festivals and haj.
Aviation experts however feel that that it will be extremely risky to allow wide-bodied aircrafts to land on the runway especially during the upcoming monsoon season as the runway was already in a very bad shape.
Karipur airport authorities had already imposed a ban on operation of wide-bodied aircrafts from May 1 following runway safety concerns and intimated closure of the runway for eight hours from June 1 to facilitate the strengthening works.
