Kozhikode: Trade, business and expatriate organisations have decided to stage a sit-in before the Calicut International Airport in Kerala on Saturday to protest against failure by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to provide alternative arrangements during the partial closure for re-carpeting works.
The move comes despite clarifications by the AAI regarding the partial closure of the airport for maintenance works to ensure safety.
A joint-meeting of various organisations and representatives of political parties held at Kozhikode recently decided to send a delegation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and federal Minister of Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati in this regard as the partial closure of the airport since May 1 for eight months would seriously affect the air connectivity to Gulf nations during the peak season.
Malabar Chamber of Commerce president C Mohanan told Oman Tribune that the partial closure would also have telling effect on the commercial sector as meat, fruit and vegetables among other commodities are exported to various Gulf countries.
