Yoga helps pilots prepare for world tour

Bengaluru:  Team Solar Impulse, which has embarked on a round-the-world tour, will rely on yoga to keep the pilots fit. The team will land in Ahmedabad on Monday night.

Travelling in a solar-powered aircraft means lower speed and longer hours of flying. During test flights, the Swiss pilots, Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, learnt that these can tax them physically and psychologically.
Sources in the project told STOI that an Indian-origin yoga teacher settled in Switzerland has helped them prepare for the gruelling tour.

Sanjeev Bhanot, founder of Yogalife, has been training Borschberg for over a year; the techniques will be used by Piccard too.

Yoga has become such an integral part of the team that the single-seat cockpit of Solar Impulse has been customized to act as a yoga mat. "There is no need at all for carry-on luggage for pilots. The seat has been specifically designed to be lowered into a horizontal position, providing enough space for the pilot to fully stretch out," Solar Impulse says on its website.
