Hyderabad: Paving the way for 'international status' for Vijayawada airport, Andhra Pradesh government has sent a report to the Centre on the market feasibility for international air traffic.
Two studies were conducted separately by the Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (INCAP) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The AP government's report is based on these two studies which revealed that the Vijayawada airport located at Gannavaram has the potential to generate a traffic of 12 lakh international passengers a year.
INCAP had entrusted the task of market feasibility study to Sapiens, which said that the market potential of the airport will touch 20 lakh passengers by 2020. "The figures are promising. We have sent the market feasibility report to the Centre, said a top official from INCAP. Vijayawada airport is currently classified as a category 'C' airport. If it has to be declared as an international airport, it should be converted into category F status.
