Mumbai: A senior state government official told TOI that the Centre is planning to formulate a new aviation policy in a month. The policy is almost ready and will be tabled before the Union cabinet soon after which the state will make changes in its guidelines, the official added.
The official said that the Centre is planning to dole out concessions for smaller private airline operators to encourage intercity air connectivity, which will be also boost the 'ease of doing business' initiative and help the Make-in-Maharashtra campaign.
The Centre's policy may propose permitting airlines to bid for the right to operate flights between hundreds of small towns and cities located within one-hour flying distance.
Airfares between cities will be capped at Rs 2,500 per passenger and the balance will be paid back to the airlines concerned by the government through the imposition of a cess, said a source. The state is also trying to draft its own guidelines, which will be ready within the next three months. Small airline operators will get compensation, if the passenger occupancy is below 75% and the landing and parking rates at the airport terminals will be minimized, said another official.
The state government has made a regional aviation policy to encourage air connectivity across important cities like Nashik, Shirdi, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Jalgaon, Satara, Nanded, Solapur and Kolhapur.
