Madurai: Despite a strong link between the large Tamil diaspora in Malaysia and the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, air-connectivity between Madurai and Malaysia is yet to become a reality.
On Saturday, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry submitted a memorandum to the consul general of Malaysia Ahamed Fajarazam Bin Jalil, who is on a visit to the city, urging the country's support in getting a direct flight between Madurai and Kuala Lumpur. In its memorandum, the chamber noted that Tamil-speaking people originating from the southern districts, especially Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram, will contribute significantly towards both inbound and outbound traffic in this sector.
It is estimated that as many as half a million passengers hailing from Madurai and other southern districts fly out of the state every year through Trichy and Chennai airports to various international destinations, with the majority of them travelling to Malaysia.
Early introduction of direct flight between Madurai and Kuala Lumpur will be commercially viable for Air Asia and immensely benefit passengers and would also encourage more people to travel to Malaysia on vacation, the trade body observed.
