City airport gears up to handle Haj rush

Ahmedabad: With the Haj season starting on August 21, Ahmedabad airport is gearing up to handle the heavy rush of pilgrims. According to sources, there will be around 7,300 haj yatris this year who will travel from Ahmedabad and there are 25 flights scheduled between Ahmedabad and Jeddah. Anticipating a heavy rush due to the pilgrims and their relatives who will come to see them off, the airport authorities have planned to make parking chargable.

The Airport Authority of India is looking forward to give out the contract for managing vehicular traffic at terminal 3, the newly developed cargo terminal. This terminal will also serve as the check-in counters for the Haj pilgrims. Airport Director A K Sharma said, "It will regularise parking and make it more systematic." The AAI, according to the tender, will be charging Rs 85 for cars, Rs 100 for SUV/tempo/mini bus/ truck/coach/bus and Rs 20 for twowheelers. The charges will increase after every 2 hours.
