Air India fares higher than private carriers on Chennai-Port Blair route.

Chennai: For someone planning to go to Port Blair in mid-August, it is better to avoid Air India flights. The airline is charging three times more than private carriers.
An one-way ticket to Port Blair costs Rs15,000 to Rs22,000 on Air India flights while it is only Rs5,000 to Rs8000 on private airlines, in the third week of August. The difference in fares between the public sector carrier and private carriers remain throughout the month.
The fares have come as a surprise for regular travellers. Fares on Chennai-Port Blair sector is high because flights are the only option to travel and airlines face loses because schedules are unpredictable due to weather.

Air Passengers Association of India national president D Sudhakara Reddy said, "It's shocking to see that Air India fares are far expensive than private carriers. There is a fare war on the route. This may be because private carriers may be keeping their fares low so that they can lure travellers. Another reason behind high fares of Air India tickets maybe because it is done deliberately to benefit private airliners."
