Domestic Air Traffic From Chennai Up 8.5%

Chennai: SpiceJet’s rather disastrous winter schedule aside, the city airport saw a marked 8.5 per cent increase in domestic traffic through 2014. This though may not be too much reason to cheer for Indian airlines because the increase in traffic — 7.15 lakh passengers — came at the cost of having to fly over 10,000 extra flights last calendar year.

Though Aviation Turbine Fuel prices dropped drastically and stayed stable, airlines have resorted to increasing flight services to attract more patronage.
This is the reason why the load factors of Indian airlines and the number of passenger miles flown have remained constant, or even dipped. The traffic numbers were posted by the Airports Authority of India on their website.
The spike in passenger traffic is attributed to one of SpiceJet’s key weapons — the Great Indian Flash Sale of flight tickets. “So many thousands of people buy tickets well in advance on these flash sales that even if their flight is cancelled people choose to fly. That’s a good sign for the industry,” said aviation analyst B Krishnan, who runs a travel-management service. For the last three years, growth in passenger traffic at Chennai has been rather flat, with growth rates meandering and additional costs of operating planes skyrocketing. After phenomenal traffic growth rates, coinciding with the boom in low-cost aviation in India, there was a dip in traffic in 2012. “After that kind of scare, anything is a positive. We will hope for better news now that SpiceJet is back in business,” he added.
