Of the 60 people, who expressed their views, during the public hearing on environmental impact assessment (EIA) study report on the proposed greenfield international airport at Mopa, most of them spoke in favour of the project while few restricted to expressing their objections and suggestions.
Though many of the speakers favoured the airport, they demanded adequate compensation and job opportunities for the locals, whereas those who raised their voice against the EIA report cited adverse effect on environment and the local people.
The five-hour proceeding conducted, with live video recording as per the revised EIA notification, will be forwarded to the concerned regulatory authority for obtaining environmental clearance.
The Collector and District Magistrate (North) Neela Mohanan presided over the proceedings and requested the public to express their views, objections and suggestions, and thereafter, the project proponent gave a presentation.
The representatives of the project proponent made a Power Point presentation explaining the contents in Konkani.
The affected villagers from Varconda, Amberem, Uguem, Mopa, Chandel and Casarvanem were present for the hearing.
