The Government of Pondicherry (also known as Puducherry) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Union Government to have Pondicherry airport operational by January 2017 The Hindu has reported. The airport is slated to launch with a Bangalore Int'l to Pondicherry via Tiruchirapally service using a 70-seater turboprop. The reopening had been mooted earlier in December when the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) submitted a proposal to the Pondicherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy.

IGI high: 50L flyers a month
By the end of this December, IGI is all set to become the first airport in the country to serve over 50 lakh flyers in a month.
The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), said the travellers included both domestic and international travellers flying in and out of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. DIAL also said that among the highest travelled places from the airport, Dubai remained on top among international destinations while Mumbai topped the domestic chart.
"By December 31, we will witness the highest number of passengers ever recorded in a month at any airport in the country.

Taking the lead from a successful pilot phase at a Hyderabad, India airport where security officials processed travellers using Aadhaar-based airport entry authentication technology, Mumbai and Bengaluru airports are also planning to implement similar pilot projects next year, according to a report by The Hindu.

You may need to convince a computer that you are telling the truth during future airport security checks, thanks to a new lie-detecting kiosk that can spot changes in physiology and behaviour during interviews with travellers.
The Automated Virtual Agent for Truth Assessments in Real Time (AVATAR) is currently being tested to help border security agents determine whether travellers coming into Canada may have undisclosed motives for entering the country.
"AVATAR is a kiosk, much like an airport check-in or grocery store self-checkout kiosk," said Professor Aaron Elkins from San Diego State University in the US.

Cheers! Nagpur Flying Club gets DGCA wings to fly high, again
In a cheering news, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has provided new wings to the Nagpur Flying Club (NFC) by giving extension of approval of Flying Training Operation (FTO)to the Club. The NFC received the permission letter from the Deputy Director of Flying Training of DGCA. The letter granted approval to NFC for flying training up to 90 days.
The NFC had completed all the required facilities, technical formalities and had deployed mandatory manpower for Flying Training Operation.

Air passenger traffic rises by 44 per cent in State
The number of air passengers from the State has witnessed a growth of around 44 per cent from April to November this year. While the number of total air passengers stood at 16.91 lakh during the corresponding period last year, it swelled to 24.28 lakh during the same time period.

Give approval to in-flight Wi-Fi services: Assocham to Govt
Pitching for an early approval to the proposal of providing in-flight Wi-Fi services over the Indian airspace, the Assocham today said that the move would not only enable the fliers stay connected even when they are mid-air but also improve flight safety.
The Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has also said that various customer surveys findings also suggest that travellers expect to stay connected via their smart devices and laptops even while flying.
The copies of the letter have also been marked to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju and Communication Minister Manoj Sinha.

Mohali: Getting connected internationally through air was the biggest achievement of Mohali this year. Initial NOC for starting air services to be valid for 3 years
New Delhi: The initial no-objection certificate for starting scheduled passenger and cargo airlines will now be valid for three years with the government tweaking existing norms to improve the ease of doing business in the aviation sector.
Civil Aviation Ministrys decision to extend the validity of such certificates also comes at a time when it is working to implement various provisions of the new civil aviation policy and also boost regional air connectivity.
Now, the initial No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued for various categories of airlines to start operations would now be valid for three years.

Air India to start Leh-Chandigarh flight from Saturday
Chandigarh: Air India (AI) will start a flight between Leh and Chandigarh from December 31, an official said here today.
The flight will operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week, an AI spokesman said.
The flight AI-457 would depart from Leh at 0805 hrs and arrive in Chandigarh at 0900 hrs.
In the return journey the flight, AI-458, would take off from Chandigarh at 0940 hrs and arrive in Leh at 1020 hrs, he said. The flight would be operated by an A-319 Airbus.

Chennai: It’s a minor feature, but one that will be of immense benefit to passengers taking flights out of Chennai, particularly those travelling abroad. Chennai airport is planing to set up weighing scales outside the terminals to allow passengers to discard any excess baggage there itself.
Airport director G. Chandramouli said they have called for tenders to procure machines and have them installed soon. “We plan to have seven machines outside both terminals. It should be in place in two months. This will help passengers to a great extent as they can weigh and leave the excess baggage with those seeing them off,” he said.

Chandigarh: City beautiful is likely to get connected with four more cities including Goa and Chennai from next year, airport authority officials said on Tuesday. As of now, 24 flights operate daily from Chandigarh International Airport to different parts of the country including two flights to the Gulf. Airport officials said that they are in talks with several airlines to start flights to new destinations. “We are hopeful that in 2017, we will have flights to four new cities. We are in talks with few airlines and they have showed interest for it,” Chandigarh Airport CEO Sunil Dutt told Chandigarh Newsline on Tuesday.
Informing that the likely cities will be Pune, Hyderabad, Goa and Chennai, Dutt said, “We believe that these cities have a good traffic from Chandigarh.

Mumbai: Jet Airways, India's premier full service international airline, will introduce its wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft on certain additional domestic and international routes, thereby boosting capacity on other key sectors and extending guests, a superior onboard experience.
The state-of-the-art aircraft will be deployed on the Mumbai-Kuwait-Mumbai and Mumbai-Jeddah-Mumbai routes, aside from Mumbai-Chennai-Mumbai and Mumbai-Bangalore-Mumbai legs on the airline's domestic network.
While the wide-body service between Mumbai-Chennai-Mumbai is slated to begin from Sunday, January 15, 2017, the airline will commence its Mumbai-Jeddah-Mumbai and Mumbai-Bangalore-Mumbai services from January 16, 2017. The Mumbai-Kuwait-Mumbai wide-body service is scheduled to start from January, 18, 2017.

Dubai-based airlines will not be allowed to increase flights to Indian cities until and unless the United Arab Emirates government allocates commercially and operationally feasible slots to Indian carriers at the Dubai International Airport.
