IGI infrastructure faces summer test

New Delhi: With all trains booked two months in advance , many travellers during the summer vacation are usually not left with any option but to fly to their destinations. This summer, IGI's domestic terminal has already witnessed a 1.5-2-fold rise in footfall compared to the offpeak period. The rush that began in May is likely to continue till August.

According to airport sources, the extra rush at the domestic terminal—25 ,000-30 ,000 people are stepping in daily while off-peak footfall was 15,000-20 ,000—is putting resources to test. The most intense periods are during Friday and Saturday evenings with the numbers peaking around 6pm when a lot of local passengers arrive for their weekend getaways. The time between 6am and 8am on Monday morning is another mad scramble when these travellers presumably return.

CBI unravels customs corruption at IGI Airport, arrests Anil Yadav

Superintendent of Customs Anil Yadav, posted as Jewellery Appraiser in the office of Additional Commissioner, Customs at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs. 18,000 from a synthetic diamond importer from Surat, Gujarat.
The complainant had alleged that Anil Yadav, seemingly in a well-rehearsed routine, demanded a bribe at the rate of Rs 2 per carat for clearing a consignment of rough synthetic diamonds that were being imported from China. He filed a case against Yadav under Prevention of Corruption Act.
Acting on his complaint, CBI laid a trap and when Yadav demanded and then, accepted the bribe, he was arrested red-handed.

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has just been selected as the second-best airport in the world for its service quality (among airports handling 25-40 million passengers a year). The awards are given by the Airport Council International (ACI), a body of airports, which covers 1,751 airports in 174 countries. That’s quite an achievement, considering the competition and the kind of development and vision being directed at what a modern airport should be and the facilities and passenger amenities on offer. I flew in for the first time into Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 recently and while it?s obvious that a humungous amount of money has gone into its making, the signage left a lot to be desired when it came to exit points and pick-up areas. The multi-level layout is largely responsible, which is where the question of what makes for a great airport arises.

IGI Named World's Second Best Airport for Service Quality

New Delhi: For the third year in a row, Indira Gandhi International Airport here has been adjudged the second best airport in the world for its service quality among the airports handling 25-40 million passengers per annum (MPPA).
Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport was placed at the fifth position in this category by the Airport Council International (ACI).
ACI is a global body of airports which represents their interests with governments and international organisations. It covers 1,751 airports in 174 countries.
However, in the global ranking, IGI this year was placed at the sixth position against last year's fourth.

More squalls likely in Delhi till June 15, Met cautions airlines

New Delhi: Those flying in and out of Delhi over the next fortnight are in for turbulent times. The Meteorological office at IGI airport has issued an advisory to all airlines asking them to check the weather forecast before Delhi-bound flights take off till June 15.

"The conditions in and around the capital are such that there may few storms over the next week. Strong storms are expected over between June 7 and 15, however, none will be as strong as last Friday's storm," said R K Jenamani, director, IGIA Met.

30 minute Havoc at the IGI airport
