PMO wants Jet-Etihad deal discussed in Cabinet

New Delhi: The Jet-Etihad deal has hit a fresh air pocket with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) asking the civil aviation ministry to bring the proposal for discussion in the Union Cabinet.
PMO has told the civil aviation ministry that the issues flagged by ministries, SEBI and FIPB need to be deliberated on. The letter was sent in April after it was felt that the deal was "complex" and after several MPs opposed it on the ground that it will divert business away from Indian centres like Delhi to Abu Dhabi.
PMO sources said the letter to the civil aviation ministry was sent within three days of the PM being given a report on the proposed deal by three senior ministers.
The signal for civil aviation minister Ajit Singh is that the proposal will need careful consideration in view of allegations that the deal will be to the detriment of Air India.
