Rs 14L spent on helipads, but PM to come by road

Chandigarh: The nearly Rs 14 lakh spent by the UT administration in the construction of three helipads at Sarangpur for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Chandigarh on September 14 (Saturday) have gone in vain, as the PM is now scheduled to reach the function site in Dhanas by road from the airport. The PM will be in the city to hand over the keys to 8,448 flats, constructed as part of the administration's slum rehabilitation programme. UT officials, however, maintained that the helipads can be put to some other use later by the administration.

The PM will reach Dhanas around 10.30am from the airport, and after an hour-long programme, will have lunch at the Punjab Raj Bhawan before flying back. UT officials said that the flats in Dhanas were one-room tenements, while the ones in Maloya in the next phase of the scheme will be two-room tenements. Unit residents - numbering 50,000 - will be able to avail the facilities of a dispensary, schools and police post within the complex for their health, education and security needs. Solar photovoltaic panels are being put on the rooftops of all the flats.
