Anecdotal evidence suggests that airfares have, in effect, doubled across various domestic sectors in the past few months. The soaring, industry-wide rates call for a probe by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to rule out possible collusive trade practice.
True, the rupee did hit record lows against the US dollar in August, and the depreciation would mean dearer aviation fuel that accounts for almost 45% of operating expenses of airlines. However, the rupee has strengthened considerably since, and yet the sky seems to be the limit when it comes to hardening fares in domestic aviation. Could it be that airline operators are taking advantage of strong passenger demand to quite wilfully jack up airfares?
