In a major development just weeks ahead of elections, the UPA government at the Centre and the UP state government (of the Samajwadi Party) have decided to give the green signal to the development of eight existing airports in Uttar Pradesh, including locations such as Meerut, Agra, Allahabad, Kanpur and even Etawah (Saifai) which is the native village of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) — that functions under the purview of the Union civil aviation ministry — and the UP government have already finalised the MoU to be signed in this regard.
Incidentally, civil aviation minister Ajit Singh, who is also the chief of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) party, also hails from Uttar Pradesh. Mr Ajit Singh was pushing hard for the development of these airports in UP.
