Air Carriers press for huge aircraft into service as passenger traffic swells in Mumbai

Mumbai: Foreign airlines are queuing up to operate massive aircraft from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) as passenger traffic has increased and certain laws are being relaxed.

After Singapore Airlines landed the A380, the world's largest aircraft, late last month at the city airport, it is now time for the longest aircraft, the Boeing 747-8, to touch down next month.

German carrier Lufthansa is set to press the 747-8 into service on its Mumbai-Frankfurt route from mid-July. Gulf-based Emirates, too, plans to operate the A380 from CSIA around the same time.

"We are all prepared to operate these new aircraft from CSIA. The passengers will be the real benefactors," said an airport spokesperson.

Passenger traffic at CSIA increased from 30.20 million in 2012-13 to 32.22 million in 2013-14 — an increase of 6.7%. CSIA receives the maximum foreign travellers in the country as Mumbai is the financial capital and also a major entry point.
