Mumbai: Shiv Sena, the ruling party in the BMC, has alleged that the Ambanis are behind the plans to build a heliport at Mahalaxmi Racecourse, a proposal that the civic standing committee has vehemently opposed.
Standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanase said, “As the BMC did not allow the Ambanis to construct a heliport on their residential building, it is suspected that the helilport is constructed at racecourse for them only.”
The Shiv Sena wants to build a theme garden at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. However, the state government has decided to construct a heliport there, asking the BMC to transfer land immediately. The heliport is to facilitate VVIP movement in and around south Mumbai.
Raising the issue in the civic standing committee, house leader Trishna Vishwasrao opposed the heliport plans. She said that the BMC instead should construct the garden for the common people. Interestingly, the Congress party also supported her opposition to the heliport.
“The 225 acre open space at the racecourse is the lungs of the city. The state wants to grab it under the pretext of heliport,” said Ms Vishwasrao.
