Baggage charges come under DGCA review

Mumbai: Aviation authorities have initiated areview of airlines' baggage policies after a litany of complaints from passengers who had to pay extra charges for carrying luggage that carriers termed as excess.

Unlike airlines in the West, Indian carriers do not charge fees for check-in baggage weighing between 15 kg and 20 kg. However, lately they have been trying to rework their policies, even reducing the weight limit of hand luggage passengers can carry from 15 kg to 7 kg.

The issue came to a head this week after it emerged that low-cost carrier AirAsia, which will start its first operations in India next week, had decided not to permit free checking in of bags.

It listed Rs 199 as the fee for luggage weighing up to 15 kg for passengers willing to pay the sum while booking the ticket itself. Those not ready to pay the fee in advance would have to shell out Rs 300 at the check-in counter.
