India can soar as an MRO hub, feel aviation experts

Chennai: The new Government should develop India as a hub for aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul due to the growing aircraft fleet, location advantage and availability of talent, feel aviation experts.
The Indian MRO market is projected to nearly double to $2 billion by 2020 when India’s scheduled airlines are expected to operate over 1,000 aircraft from 400 now, according to CAPA India, an aviation research firm.
To enhance employment prospect and reduce maintenance costs, the Government should devise a policy to establish MROs here so that Indian airlines need not send their aircraft abroad for maintenance. The policy should ensure that MROs get business from neighbouring countries, said Jitender Bhargava, former executive director of Air India.

Air India and Indian Airlines were expected to set up MROs in collaboration with Boeing and Airbus respectively — as per agreements signed at the time of placing aircraft orders in 2005. They are still not operational, he told Business Line.
