Stingy on Space, Airlines Make the Passengers Fly Light

Kochi: : ‘Pack more, pay more’ seems to be the new mantra of airline companies, when it comes to taming passengers from the state who want to make the most of their baggage allowance.
Dubai-based airline Flydubai, which recently started operations from Kerala, limits cabin luggage at 7 kg. The base ticket rate of the airline from Kochi to Dubai is Rs. 17,000. While flying economy class, passengers who book tickets on the airline website can pre-pay to check in 20 kg of baggage or more at flat rates. Those who opt to make the payment at the airport will have to pay a per kg rate.
“Air fares have always been determined by factors such as luggage, food and in-flight entertainment. Now the customer has the choice to determine the fare. If he goes overseas for shopping and need to bring back more luggage, only then he needs to pay more. This is a fair deal and customers in the state will be more benefited by this,” said Sudhir Sreedharan, Senior vice president, Commercial Operations, Flydubai.

Currently, the average ticket tariff between Kerala and West Asia is around Rs. 25,000. During peak seaons in June, July and August, the fares go up to `60,000. Some legacy airline companies which used to permit up to 20 kg of checked in baggage have recently brought it down to 15 kg.
