Newark: A flight headed for India was forced to return to Newark Liberty
International Airport late this afternoon due to an engine fire, the
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.
The agency previously reported that the fire was caused by bird strike, but later said that was not the case, and that the cause remains under investigation.
Air India Flight 144, with 313 passengers bound for Mumbai, had taken off from Newark at 4:25 p.m., when the engine caught fire, said Erica Dumas, a Port Authority spokeswoman.
Dumas said the captain turned the Boeing 777-300 around after reporting the engine had failed and he could see flames shooting from it.
