Bhopal: State capital's Raja Bhoj Airport is unable to retain its
domestic airlines, even as Centre is mulling to declare it an
international airport. Minister of state for civil aviation, G M
Siddeswara has announced in the Lok Sabha recently that government is
considering a proposal to declare airports in Bhopal, Indore and Raipur
as international airports.
While air travellers from Bhopal have hailed the move, reality is that Raja Bhoj airport is struggling to retain its domestic airlines. Services from the city airport has been curtailed and Bhopal is now connected only to Mumbai and Delhi on India's air map.
Private airlines, SpiceJet that started operations from Bhopal to Hyderabad and Delhi in the past, have withdrawn their services while Jet Airways have scrapped operations to Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. On an average, around 500 travellers fly from Bhopal daily.
