Kerala's airports turning into gold warehouses

Kozhikode/Kochi:A huge spurt in gold smuggling has led to warehousing problems in the state's airports. The customs department at the Karipur International Airport in Kozhikode has in its vaults more than 100kg gold seized from smugglers and has run out of space to stock the booty.

The department now wants its haul transferred to the Customs House at Kochi. "The gold stock at the warehouse has not been shifted to Kochi since March 2013," a senior customs official at the airport told TOI.

The Kozhikode customs had seized 78kg gold (worth Rs 23 cr) in 2013-14, a six-fold jump from the 13kg gold in 2012-13. In the current quarter, the customs has seized 20 kg gold.

During the last financial year, the customs had sold 18.73kg gold in the open market, netting Rs 5.5 crore.
In Kochi it is a different story. In the last fiscal year, the customs and directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) together seized 100kg gold at the Cochin International Airport.
