Mumbai: In the first such case at the city’s domestic airport in 20
years, customs officials Saturday intercepted and arrested a man
allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 2.26 crore.
According to customs, Fayas Shaikh (48), a resident of Yari Road in Andheri (West), was caught while attempting to smuggle over 10 kgs of gold. Shaikh, who arrived from Chennai in an Air India flight, had concealed two plastic garlands containing 22 packets carefully wrapped in cello tape. Eight gold bars and 32 cut pieces of gold weighing 10.7 kgs were found in his possession, a customs officer said.
According to officials, the customs in Mumbai was tipped off on Saturday morning by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in Chennai after Shaikh narrowly escaped their trap. “DRI told us that a passenger travelling in an Air India flight from Muscat would conceal gold in the aircraft and that Shaikh would board the same flight from Chennai to Mumbai and collect it,” said a customs officer.
“The Muscat flyer vacated the seat 17 F after alighting at Chennai. Before he got off, he hid the consignment into a pipe near the life jacket beneath his seat,” the officer said.
