Jet wheel gets stuck in runway crater at Kolkata airport

Kolkata: Two incidents in a span of 30 minutes affected operations of three flights at Kolkata airport on Friday morning.

In the first incident, a GoAir flight bound for Bagdogra was taxiing for takeoff around 11.15 am when it got stranded after one of its rear wheels got stuck in a crater. Sources said patch repairs that had earlier been carried out on the taxi track had given way, leaving a crater that caught the GoAir plane.
After the flight captain contacted the ATC, the controller alerted the airline which then sent a pushback tractor to tow the aircraft back to the parking bay. After the plane was retrieved, engineers inspected the aircraft before certifying it fit to fly. Following the DGCA nod, the flight took off for Bagdogra an hour later.

According to airport officials, a GoAir flight from Nagpur that was preparing to land was put on hold and asked to hover over Kolkata till the birds were cleared. Similarly, a Jet Airways flight to Guwahati that was taxiing for takeoff was asked to wait. When the unwanted winged guests were finally shooed off, the Jet Airways flight took off and the GoAir plane landed soon after.
