New Delhi: Loss-making Air India (AI) is buying bigger wine glasses,
refurbishing interiors of its fleet and ordering a new dress code for
its cabin crew as part of an image makeover. While the management is
taking these steps to upgrade the look of the airline following its Star
Alliance membership, many insiders feel that some of the additional
expenditure could be curtailed.
AI chairman and managing director Rohit Nandan did not reply to Mail Today text messages asking for his comments on Friday. On Sunday, he referred Mail Today to corporate communications officials, who in turn said that it is not possible to reply on the same day. The management has justified the new steps as part of the effort to better services since the carrier joined Star Alliance.
The national carrier has become the only airline world-wide to offer ine to its business and first-class international passengers in 450 ml stem glassware while every other airline like Lufthansa, Swiss Air and Singapore Airlines uses the standard 150 ml tic wine cup costs around Rs.200, the glass ones will wine cost around Rs.400 each. Strangely, a large number of plastic wine cups are missing from the galleys of AI's fleet and crew members have been serv-ing wine in ordinary glasses to executive and business class passengers. "We serve high-quality red and white wine made in France and Germany besides French champagne in ordinary glasses after losing several plastic wine cups. Many passengers have complained to us as they don't like having wine in regular glasses. We feel ashamed," another crew member said.
