Centre Planning to Develop of 400 World War II Airports: Union Minister

Srikakulam:  Civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju has said that the Union government is seriously examining the possibility of bringing into utilisation nearly 400 airstrips and airports across India which were under operation during the World War II.

Speaking to reporters after attending the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers’ meeting at SSR Puram in Etcherla mandal of the district Sunday, Ashok Gajapathi Raju felt that the civil aviation industry has a lot of potential to grow and provide good job opportunities but the same has not been exploited to the optimum level. “The Union  government will take all steps to develop the airports at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati and Rajahmundry through introduction of more flight services in Andhra Pradesh. We also want to operationalise the abandoned airport at Kadapa and efforts are on in this direction,” he added.

The Union minister said that civil aviation is being recognised as a major booster for the tourism sector in different states and the chief ministers of various states are identifying ways and means for improving the transport system by encouraging cargo handling through flights.
