Women used as carriers for gold smuggling

Ahmedabad:  In the past 16 months, gold smuggling has become rampant after restrictions put by central government on gold imports since June last year. While the customs department at the city airport have set up air intelligence unit (AIU) to stop smuggling, smugglers are now using women as carriers to bring in gold inside the country.

Around 10 women have been detained, including a minor girl and a 60-year-old, by the department this year for smuggling gold. Most of the women caught were in their mid-20s and 30s and some were housewives.

In one of the biggest seizures, AIU on Saturday detained two women with over 20 gold bars hidden in their jeans pocket and undergarments. "One of them was a minor accompanied by her father while the other was hiding it inside her belt," said a customs official.
