Bomb blast threat at IGI triggers security upgrade

New Delhi: One month ago, security officers at Indira Gandhi International Airport received a fax. It contained a threat to execute a bomb blast at the airport.

While officials in charge of airport security are used to hoax messages, they did not take the fax received on October 26 lightly. One of the reasons for this was the fact that it arrived just three days after threats to bomb flights between Kochi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai following which all three airports were put on high alert.


Since then, according to sources, security agencies at the airport have received "an alarming number" of faxes, calls and emails, threatening to blow up IGI. All security agencies at the airport, including Delhi Police and CISF, have scaled up security here. Police officials say the number of Quick Reaction Teams has been increased and their patrols made more frequent.
Police have added four more pickets on the road leading from Mehram Nagar to the international terminal. "These pickets will be turned into police booths with wireless sets and additional staff.
