Pernem: An air of suspense and slight tension prevails around Mopa plateau, as the hearing on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) study of the proposed Mopa airport draws near and a rift between villagers around it appears imminent.
The proposed Mopa international airport has drawn opposition among villagers of Varkhand-Nagzar, Mopa-Ugvem-Tamboxem, Chandel and Casarvarnem, but supporters of the project have also been quite vociferous in recent months.
Devendra Prabhudessai, convenor of People for Mopa, alleges that residents in seven affected villages are being instigated to oppose Mopa airport at the hearing. "They have been fed lies that they will lose their ancestral land, grazing lands, and springs. Some poor farmers may fall prey to their tactics," he says.
