UAVs pose threat to flights: Aviation experts

Chennai: Pilots are yet to report near misses between hobby drones and aircraft but aviation experts and air traffic controllers are worried that lack of law in regulating use of such tiny remote controlled flying objects will turn out to be a risk for flights. Foreshore Estate where a drone fell on a hotel is near the flight approach path to the airport.

Though the drone that crashed into the terrace of a building at Adyar was not flying at an altitude that could have interfered with commercial airliners, pilots and safety experts believe that an increase use of such machines can be a threat to flight safety. And DGCA is yet to formulate a rule to certify use of drones. UK has specific law that prohibits flying small unmanned aircraft within 150metres of congested areas or within 50metres of a vessel, vehicle or a building not owned by the owner of the drone.

Most aircraft fly at around 2,000feet over the city and unauthorized flying is banned at 15km to 25km radius of the airport. Air traffic control needs to be notified. However, drones are tiny and difficult to detect from the ground when they fly at high altitude.
