A free backyard show for these lucky villagers

Bengaluru: "Wanna watch Aero India for free? Just take a left and travel for about 2km," announced a shopkeeper at Hunasamaranahalli, about 1km from Yelahanka Air Base, on Friday morning.

We take a deviation from Ballari Road and crisscross through a narrow stretch to reach Suggata village.
Otherwise a sleepy hamlet of about 250 houses, where agriculture is a way of work, or even construction labour, Suggata has undergone a makeover in the past few days. Chairs are lined up in front of almost every house and pandals have come up on terraces of some buildings to facilitate the view.

Balaji Shanmukha, 28, a network administrator with a city firm and resident of BTM Layout, makes sure he reaches a relative's house in Suggata during air shows. "It's like a festival and party time here during the show. Friends and relatives drop in to enjoy as the place kisses the Air Base border. We use binoculars and good cameras to catch the action," he added.

A few kilometres away in Gantinganahalli village, the mood is more colourful. Ice-cream stalls, watermelon carts and sugarcane juice centres have come up in temporary sheds, and hawkers have brought their wares too.
