CIAL duty-free sales to touch Rs.165 crore

Kochi: On the back of a sharp rise in the international traffic through the airport here, the business of airport retailing at Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is set to scale new heights with total income from the sector set to cross Rs. 165 crore this fiscal.

As per official estimates, the sector has clocked a turnover of Rs.147.56 crore till January 15 with the gross profit standing at Rs.65.38 crore. In the previous fiscal (2013- 2014), total income from duty-free sales was Rs.138.41 crore, which constituted about 80 per cent of its non-aviation revenue. Since its inception, airport retailing has been maintaining an average annual growth rate of 20 per cent since its inception.

CIAL directly operates the duty-free business. “By directly procuring the products, we have been able to sell them at a relatively cheaper price, which has a positive impact on the sales,” said V.J. Kurien, Managing Director, CIAL
