Amritsar: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) arrested a US national with live cartridges at Amritsar's Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport on Wednesday.
CISF commandant Suman Kumar told TOI that they found 25 live cartridges and one empty shell from the handbag of Manjita Dhillon, who was to fly to Delhi on a Jet Airways flight, while carrying out a routine check.
She was to board a flight to Pune at 2.55 pm and then take one to Los Angeles from Mumbai on Thursday, the officer said.
Manjita, 52, resides in Los Angeles with her husband Nirmal Singh, who is a building contractor. Manjita said she had arrived in India with an Indonesian group and had gone to attend a marriage function at Nawanshahr. According to Commandant Suman, Manjita, who was born in Indonesia, claimed that she had strained relations with some of her relatives who had put cartridges in her handbag.
Dhillon has been handed over to the police. Amritsar assistant deputy commissioner of police (city II) Ketan Bali Ram Patil said police had booked Manjita under sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. He said the cartridges were of .223 bore rifle.
Manjita told police that she had no knowledge about the cartridges recovered from her bag.
