SpiceJet seeks waiver of security nod for four jets

Helped by the government to sail through the financial crisis last December, low-cost airline SpiceJet now wants security clearance exemption for leasing four Boeing 737 aircraft from Travel Services of Czech Republic.

The airline has proposed to wet-lease the narrow-body aircraft for three months. The leased planes would be deployed on its network in the coming summer schedule.

An official spokesperson confirmed the development. Under a wet-lease arrangement, a lessor or an airline provides an aircraft along with crew, maintenance and other services. A dry-lease refers to renting of airplane without crew.

“SpiceJet has written to aviation authorities for exemption from security clearance,” an industry source told FC.

Another official who also spoke on the condition of anonymity said that wet-leasing of an aircraft was a cumbersome process requiring many regulatory approvals.
