India's first private greenfield airport at Andal set to start flights

Satyajit Bose, a prominent senior cardiac surgeon in Durgapur and chairman of The Mission Hospital there, is planning to fly Air India to Kolkata on May 18 to be a part of what he thinks will be “a historic moment” for the people in the region. That is the day the Bengal Aerotropolis Projects (BAPL)-promoted private greenfield airport – India’s first such – at Andal near Durgapur becomes operational.

“I am very happy. Finally it has happened,” he told Business Standard.

That day, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, along with some of her cabinet colleagues, secretaries and members of Tollywood, are also expected to travel in the opposite direction on the first Air India flight from Kolkata to Durgapur.
