Chennai: Clearance of imported cargo will get faster with the city
airport moving the operations to a private air freight station at
Irungattukottai on Friday. Trucks will pick up cargo from the aircraft
and move them to the freight station where customs will issue clearance.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) gave a licence to operate the freight station at the existing inland container depot to decongest the airport's cargo terminal. Clearance will be quick and importers will save 20% to 25% of the cost due to speed and efficiency, airport officials said.
The move comes after importers complained of delay in clearing consignments due to infrastructure limitations at the airport. "It takes six days for a consignment to be cleared if it is done inside the cargo terminal, but the time can be cut to three days if it is done at the air freight station. The station will have facilities for post-shipment and pre-shipment formalities including customs clearance," an airport official said.
