The heavy showers in Mumbai led to chaotic scenes at the airport with
four morning flights forced to abort landing at the last minute, two
being diverted to Ahmedabad and Baroda, and a Kolkata flight being
delayed as the pilot failed to turn up in time. Routine maintenance
closure also contributed to air traffic congestion.
Passengers of Air India flight AI 675 to Kolkata spent two and a half hours in the aircraft after the pilot reportedly did not make it on time. Passenger Sameer Mathecha, 43, said, "Originally scheduled to take off at 9.30 am, the flight departed only at noon to reach Kolkata at 2.50 pm."
Agitated passengers gathered at the cockpit door demanding an explanation. "When passengers coming late are not accommodated even a minute after gate closure, how can they be held 'hostage' without a pilot turning up?" one passenger asked.
