Time may be running out for Patna airport. A clock tower on a building that hosts the Bihar government secretariat in Patna, located on the path of the runway, is set to hamper India's standing in the International Civil Aviation Organisation, which will audit the country in November.
The clock tower, built in 1917, is an obstacle in the landing path at the airport and has been flagged by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in a recent audit conducted ahead of the ICAO survey.
The ICAO, a UN specialised agency, develops international standards and recommended practices which are used by states for their national civil aviation regulations. The organisation audits its 191 membercountries periodically to determine if its standards are followed. A downgrade by ICAO could lead to relegation by other regulators such as the US Federal Aviation Administration.
